Manar Abboud: A Success Story

Being alive merely because days are passing by doesn’t sound too complicated. However, the true challenge lies in living life to its fullest, starting each day with a determination to take note of your surroundings, pursuing your hopes and aspirations, and embracing the passion that leads to success and achievements.

Today’s inspiring story is of Mrs. Manar Abboud, a woman who lives a life deserving of admiration, constantly striving towards her goals. She believes that within her lies a vast world unfolding with each passing day.

Humanitarian and academic experiences culminated in Manar Abboud’s establishment of the “Di3tna” initiative

Manar Abboud describes herself as a lifelong learner, constantly engaging with knowledge and opportunities. Since childhood, existential questions about humanity, the universe, life, God, and the purpose of existence on Earth have driven her curiosity.

Manar has always dreamt of providing a platform where everyone could express their truths openly and freely. She believed in lending support to individuals, enabling them to meet their own needs, become agents of change, and lead their personal development journeys.

Recognizing that the majority of people remain unaware of their strengths, and often ignore the areas in need of growth and improvement within themselves, Manar Abboud dedicated herself to volunteering and humanitarian work. She actively participated in educational workshops and events, enriching her life experiences. Eventually, she decided to consolidate said experiences and establish the “Di3tna” initiative after participating in a global youth program, making good use of years worth of knowledge and skills.

The launch of the “Di3tna” initiative and its general direction

About the launch of the Di3tna Initiative, Manar says: “The initiative was officially launched in 2016 as a group of friends coming together, each contributing with valuable experiences they possessed. Over time, more people who believed in our mission joined the initiative, bringing their passion, dedication, and human compassion.”

Describing the general vision of “Di3tna” initiative, she adds: “The overarching vision of our endeavor revolves around actively contributing to creating a compassionate society, where personal conviction and self-belief serve as catalysts for change, through utilizing one’s abilities to gain self-awareness, understand the surrounding environment, and master the tools necessary for accomplishing the seemingly impossible.”

The initiative’s methodology is based on cognitive, economic, and social empowerment, using specialized programs, events, and clubs designed to facilitate various forms of empowerment.

Supporters of the success of “Manar Abboud” and “Di3tna” initiative

Manar Abboud recognizes her family as her primary support system. Their unwavering support continues to this day.  Her family stands by her side in every decision or action affecting her humanitarian work. She also cherishes the support of numerous friends who believe in her mission.

Additionally, Manar’s life partner, whom she met in 2018, plays a significant role in her journey. Sharing the same passion and concern for humanity, he doubled her motivation. Through his scientific and humanitarian experiences, he continues to support Manar in her work.

Characteristics and objectives of the “Di3tna” initiative’s team.

What sets the “Di3tna” initiative apart, according to Manar, is the sense of belonging it fosters as “one family”. The initiative welcomes anyone who seeks to learn. It is worth mentioning that “Di3tna” is the first countryside-originated initiative that is still actively running. “Di3tna Cultural Forum” has been licensed as the official entity and umbrella organization for its work.

The initiative targets all age and societal groups. The name of the village from which the initiative was launched was not chosen, believing that “humanity is one village”.

Regarding the initiative’s goals, Manar emphasizes their nature as “interim milestones as part of a grander vision, with an emphasis on continuous progress and refusal to settle for limitations. The initiative aims to have a broad impact, bringing smiles to the distressed and offering ease to those in pain.”

“Be truthful  in everything, so that the truth of everything will be revealed to you.” This was Manar Abboud’s advice to every ambitious person who seeks to develop himself, believes in his abilities, and trusts that change for the better inevitably begins from within.

Sabat Islambouli

Sabat Islambouli- A Woman of History

Sabat Islambouli

Sabat Islambouli- A Woman of History

What Sabat Islambouli did in her time was extraordinary, as people used to believe that women who studied would develop hysteria. Can you imagine the courage required to emigrate and study medicine abroad?

An American doctor posted a photo dated 1985 of three women dressed in traditional costumes representing their countries on her blog. They gained attention after it was revealed. Those women were among the first female doctors in the world. One of them is the Syrian doctor “Sabat Islambouli”.

Who is Sabat Islambouli?

Sabat Islambouli was born in Damascus in 1867. She was Jewish of Kurdish origins, and many disagreed on the pronunciation of her name. One could pronounce it “Thabat” or “Tabat”. And a similar disagreement accompanied her last name, as it could be “Istanbul” or “Islambouli”.

Islambouli studied at the Woman’s Medical College of Pennsylvania, USA. Many people know that this college was the first in the world to train women in treating various gynecological diseases. Moreover, she obtained her medical degree in 1980. We believe that it is one of the first, if not the first, Syrian women to obtain a medical degree.¹

Despite having been a successful woman who struggled and risked her life to achieve her dream, she is historically unknown. And not much has been documented about her life. There is no information about her background, upbringing, or her journey to the United States of America. All we know about her is that she belonged to a wealthy family. She was known to wear a silk kaftan and adorn it with jewelry.²

What was the life of Sabat Islambouli like, and what were her achievements?

We do not know much about Sabat’s life. Since all the information we know about her is limited to what the university wrote in her university record and alumni book. However, it was evident that she struggled and suffered a lot to get to the United States of America to study medicine.

The practice of medicine- back then- was restricted to men, even with regard to gynecological diseases. People used to believe that women who studied were susceptible to developing neurological diseases, uterine diseases, and hysteria. It was also believed that two systems cannot function together properly in a female. Therefore, one should not occupy herself mentally in order to preserve the health of her reproductive system. Also, it is safe to say that Sabat Islambouli was a bold and ambitious woman. Who faced many difficulties in order to obtain her degree.³

Papers assume that she returned to Damascus after graduating to practice her profession as a doctor. But there are no documented facts about her work as a doctor there. The practice of medicine at that time was bound to old bimaristans and doctor’s home visits.

The university website stated that she went to Cairo after working in Damascus for some time. The Egyptian Nursing Administration recorded documents of her working there as a nurse in 1919. A book issued by her college also mentioned her presence there in 1926. But any traces of her disappeared after that.²

How did Sabat die?

Sabat Islambouli died in Cairo in 1941, and some of her descendants currently live in Canada. Despite the lack of information about her. She became an inspiration to many after her photo spread with two other female doctors.

The entire world was shocked by the date of the image. As people did not know that there were female doctors at that time. Sabat set an exemplary role model with her love for science, her diligence in acquiring it, and overcoming many challenges to achieve her dream.

To this day, there are still many people who are interested in Sabat Islambouli and are gathering information about her.  With the aim of understanding her origins, her journey to the United States of America, and her medical practices. Hoping that we can find answers to the many questions related to this doctor.

We take pride in having a woman like her in our history. Proving that women are capable of obtaining degrees and practicing various professions. We strongly believe that Sabat Islambouli had a great impact on inspiring other women to study. She even played a role in breaking old stereotypes about women. Her achievements will continue to inspire and astound many generations to come.

Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure

Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure – Sustainable Development Goals in Syria

Industry Innovation and Infrastructure

Industry Innovation and Infrastructure - Sustainable development goals in Syria

The presence of “Industry and Innovation” side by side is not strange. In fact, creativity is born from the womb of imagination to become a reality. This applies to various fields and sectors. What is an industry without innovation? Innovation leaves its mark starting from solving simple life problems to guiding the planet towards sustainability.

The industry in Syria ranks second in terms of economic importance. The gross domestic product rate of the industrial sector reached about 23.7% in 2010.¹ Syria directed efforts towards the development of industry and keeping up with technology and innovation, in line with the goals of the United Nations to eradicate poverty and achieve decent living. However, the war caused the regression of this sector and led us back to the construction stages.

Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure

“Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure” is the ninth goal of the UN Sustainable Development Goals. The United Nations made it one of its goals due to its importance in economic growth, prosperity, and poverty eradication.² Through providing jobs and improving livelihoods. As well as, globalization and significant advancements in technology calling for innovation and finding suitable advanced means. Such as renewable energy and sustainable production methods. In addition to the need for solid ground and infrastructure such as roads, bridges, sanitation systems, and others.

However, many developing countries still suffer from a severe shortage of these resources. Which hinders industrial development and economic growth. Therefore, the United Nations has recognized that this goal could not be achieved without the unrestricted provision of resources in developing cities in particular.

The ninth goal includes a number of recommendations regarding the three pillars of sustainable development: the environment, social development, and economic development. It is connected to other goals. Such as the third goal, which states “Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages”, the sixth goal “Clean Water and Sanitation”, and the seventh goal “Affordable and Clean Energy”.

The role of organizations in restoring the infrastructure in Syria

The war in Syria has led to the deterioration of infrastructure and many power and water stations going out of service. As well as a negative decline in schools, healthcare, sanitation, and disruption in the industrial sector.

Estimates have shown more than 50% of the infrastructure has been damaged,³ leading to international action and intensive efforts to address the situation. Moreover, international organizations have sought to restore the infrastructure. Some of these organizations and their activities in industry improvement and innovation include:

  1. First: The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), in cooperation with the United Nations Development Program, worked in 2022 to reactivate the water pumping station in the “Seventh Irrigation Sector” in Deir ez-Zor Governorate. This comes after it has been out of service for more than ten years. It is considered one of the most important stations because it supplies more than 7,500 hectares of irrigation water and provides for about 10,000 farming families.⁴
  2. Second: Oxfam, in cooperation with the Municipal Council of “Duma”, supervised the repair of the sewage network in the city. This network was completely destroyed, leading to its contamination with water pumped for the residents and indirectly affecting the industrial sector in the region. The organization, in coordination with Rif-Dimashq Governorate and the City Council, sent a specialized team to repair it in several neighborhoods of the city.⁵
  3. Third: The Danish Refugee Council (DRC) has carried out a project to remove the rubble caused by the restoration of people’s homes from the streets of Zabadani. More than 25 thousand cubic meters of rubble were carried away.⁶

The United Nations Development Program and its role in achieving the goal of industry, innovation, and infrastructure

The United Nations Development Program is a UN network concerned with global development. It is an organization that advocates for change and connects countries with knowledge, expertise, and resources to help people build better lives.

The program aims to help stabilize communities and provide basic services to maintain a good quality of life. In addition to sound infrastructure, and promote industry and innovation, by contributing to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals 3,6,7 and 9, by providing many services, including:

  • First: Solid waste management.
  • Second: Rehabilitation and repair of sewage, water, and electricity networks.
  • Third: Rehabilitation of markets and shops.
  • Fourth: Supporting renewable energy solutions.
  • Fifth: Rehabilitation of social infrastructure, such as schools and medical facilities.⁴

The industrial sector in Syria is one of the important sectors that contribute to increasing the GDP. The state works on supporting it with the services delivered to the public and private sectors through the ministries, and the facilities it provides to support infrastructure, energy, and technology.

Compulsive Hoarding Disorder

Compulsive Hoarding Disorder

Compulsive Hoarding Disorder

Compulsive Hoarding Disorder

A person with compulsive hoarding disorder finds it very difficult to get rid of their possessions, even if they make a mess. Truth be told, we are all emotionally attached to some things and possessions of material or emotional value and we are proud to neglect them. But what if we keep all the things we have, no matter how important they are, and we might even be afraid of losing them?

Specialists consider this disorder a serious psychological condition, which has its own causes, symptoms, and treatment. This is what we will learn about in this article.

What is Compulsive Hoarding Disorder?

Compulsive hoarding disorder is a mental disorder that leads a person to keep all his belongings. He has a hard time giving it up because he thinks he desperately needs to keep those things.¹ ² Moreover, The person with the disorder usually thinks he is normal and does not notice any problem, which makes it difficult to convince him to undergo treatment.

The overall prevalence of compulsive hoarding disorder is about 2.6%. Rates also increase in people over sixty years of age or who have been diagnosed with other mental disorders.²  In addition, the severity of the injury ranges from mild to severe.

Let’s explain the symptoms, causes, and treatment of the disorder.

Symptoms of Compulsive Hoarding Disorder

Symptoms often appear from adolescence to the early years of puberty.  Some of the symptoms:

  • Buying things that we may not need and that we do not have space for, and having great difficulty getting rid of them.
  • Try to be ideal, avoid, or postpone decisions.
  • In addition to planning and organization problems.
  • Feeling sad, having trouble performing tasks, or locking yourself and others and pets in your home.
  • Accumulation of chaos and struggle with others trying to reduce clutter.
  • Problems with our romantic relationships, work, and avoidance of social activities.¹

Causes

The exact causes are still unknown. However, genetic characteristics, brain function, and stressful life events are possible causes of the disorder.

The patient keeps items for several reasons, including:

  • Believing that these things are special or will be of need in the future.
  • Emotionally attached to these things, reminding them of happy times, people, or their pets.
  • Feels safe and comfortable when these things are present.¹

Treatment for this disorder

The primary treatment is cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). It is a treatment based on the development of skills and behaviors to train the injured person to cope and deal with various problems that he may face. Doctors may prescribe certain medications, especially when you have anxiety or depression along with compulsive hoarding disorder.²

Any abnormal behavior that controls you without being able to control it, and hinders your daily life, is a psychological problem that is supposed to be solved and cannot be treated as a normal condition. This includes compulsive hoarding disorder that throws you into a vicious circle of attachment to things followed by chaos and malaise.

Therefore, recognizing the psychological problem, identifying it, then dealing with it seriously, resorting to appropriate treatment methods for it, and breaking the spiral of the situation.

Stay well with a more peaceful and organized space at all levels. From the Uplifting Syrian Women team, we wish you comfortable days, less crowding, and greater relief.

autism spectrum disorder

Autism Spectrum Disorder: World Autism Awareness Day

Autism Spectrum Disorder

Autism Spectrum Disorder: World Autism Awareness Day

World Autism Awareness Day aims to raise awareness about autism spectrum disorder, celebrate people with Autism, and renew our pledge to help them. Giving them all possible opportunities for education, employment, and integration, recognizing their full rights, and not marginalizing them. Unfortunately, in most countries of the world, these individuals suffer from the denial of their basic human rights and struggle with discrimination and exclusion.

“To measure the success of our societies, we should examine how well those with different abilities, including persons with autism, are integrated as full and valued members.”
– Ban Ki-Moon, Former United Nations Secretary-General.

Ban Ki-Moon also stated that education and employment are key to reaching success. In 2007, the UN General Assembly declared April 2nd of every year, as World Autism Awareness Day. The world celebrates this day every year since 2008. The World Health Organization estimates that one in every 100 children is diagnosed with autism, and some studies have reported much higher numbers.

What is an autism spectrum disorder (ASD)?

World Autism Awareness Day aims to raise awareness of this disorder and how to deal with people with it. For this reason, we will talk briefly about what this disorder is and what are its symptoms.

Autism spectrum disorder is a neurodevelopmental disorder, its symptoms present in early childhood and can last throughout a person’s life. Autism affects people of all races, genders, and economic backgrounds. It is three to four times more common in males than females. This disorder is characterized by symptoms that vary from one person to another, but often manifest as follows:

  • Persistent deficits in social communication and interaction (e.g. Not responding or being slow to respond to one’s name or to other verbal bids for attention. Appearing not to look at or listen to people talking).
  • Restricted and repetitive patterns of behavior, interests, and activities (e.g. Repeating certain behaviors or having unusual behaviors).

Causes of autism spectrum disorder (ASD)

After identifying some of the signs and symptoms of ASD, we will move on to find out together what causes autism spectrum disorder. Although specialists do not know what causes autism spectrum disorder, certain factors can be associated with an increased risk of developing autism spectrum disorder, including:

1- Genetic abnormalities.
2- Having a sibling with ASD.
3- Having older parents.
4- Mother taking some medications during pregnancy.

One of the recommendations of World Autism Awareness Day is the need to see and consult a specialist doctor. It is very important to consult a doctor as soon as the symptoms are noticed in the child.

Diagnosis and early intensive treatment have the potential to improve the outcome. A range of behavior and communication therapy programs determined by a group of specialists may proceed. The aim is to maximize functioning, move the child toward independence, and improve the quality of life.

Treatment for (ASD)

No medication can improve the core signs of autism spectrum disorder. Specific remedies can help control symptoms and associated medical conditions. Such as anxiety, sleeping problems, and digestive issues under the supervision of a specialist. And most important of all is to identify the severity of the child’s condition and symptoms.

It is essential to constantly encourage the children and help them develop, reward them for every positive thing they do. Also not keep them distant from social life and have them integrated into it whenever possible. It is also necessary to adhere to disciplines, as an autistic child has trouble tolerating changes in routine.

Parents understandably become exhausted by the relentless performance of challenging behaviors by their autistic children. And it’s our duty, as a community, to support each other, show respect and consideration for these children and their families, and deal with them with special care.

We celebrate World Autism Awareness Day in our initiative. And we appreciate the parents of these children, support and thank them for their patience and endurance, as we care for the persons with special needs; including children with autism spectrum disorder, and we thank all humanitarian associations and organizations that assist and care for them.

Name some characteristics of people with autism that we haven’t mentioned, and if you are close or familiar with an autistic person, how is your interaction with them and the treatment of those around them?

Decent Work

Decent Work and Economic Growth- Sustainable Development Goals in Syria

Decent Work

Decent Work and Economic Growth - Sustainable development goals in Syria

In speaking of decent work; the availability of an appropriate environment that embraces the human and appreciates his efforts is one of the simplest conditions that must be provided. And even though we just described it as “simple”, achieving it guarantees high productivity for individuals and improvement for the economy of the countries. And from that, “Decent Work” is considered one of the goals of sustainable development. As this goal guarantees to achieve a productive and sustainable economy in the event that the work carries out the minimum livelihood components for its employees/ owners.

What is decent work?

Decent work is a wide concept that refers to achieving complete and sustainable development, which grants opportunities for everyone and helps many people get rid of poverty. It also refers to the economic growth that provides full and productive employment, with decent work circumstances.

These circumstances include: Achieving career safety and security and equality in circumstances between women and men. And finally, decent work refers to the development that protects the environment and guarantees sustainable exploitation of resources.¹

When is the work considered decent?

According to the standards of the International Labor Organization; The following dimensions measure the level of decent work:

  • Availability of job opportunities and sufficient profits: That is by providing appropriate opportunities for all individuals willing and able to work. With enough salary, they can live a decent life. And it is compatible with the price of goods and services needed by the individuals.
  • Stability and safety at work: This includes the protection and peace of employment consistent with economic changes, and protection against unfair dismissal. As losing a job is a severe incident for most people.
  • Equal opportunities and treatment at work: Decent work must guarantee equal opportunities for men and women without any kind of discrimination in terms of opportunities or treatment. Achieving economic and social justice largely reflects equality. Which leads to tangible and sustainable improvements at work.
  • Social protection: This refers to general actions taken in response to levels of vulnerability, risk, and deprivation considered socially unacceptable within a given system or society. These measures include labor market interventions, social safety networks, and pensions.
  • Fighting the work that should be abolished: The expression “fighting the work that should be abolished” expresses protection from discrimination, forced labor, and child labor. And that work must be freely chosen without forcing it on the individuals. We must eliminate these practices as agreed in international declarations and labor standards.²

In addition:

  • A safe work environment:  work cannot be decent unless the work environment is safe and healthy. Therefore, we must emphasize the prevention of work-related injuries and accidents, occupational diseases, and deaths. An effective inspection system is an essential element for promoting decent work and ensuring workers’ rights.
  •  Decent work time and balance between work, family, and personal life:  The case of “work time” has been important to the International Labor Organization since its foundation. In fact, balancing work, family, and personal life is often associated with greatly increased productivity. Contributing to the achievement of this improves the attraction of new employees and maintains the existing employees.
  • Social dialogue and representation of employers and workers:  It includes all types of negotiation, consultation, and exchange of information between representatives of governments, employers, and workers on issues of common interest with regard to economic and social policies. Which leads to increased productivity and sense of belonging to the workplace, and avoiding conflicts in the workplace.²

What are the challenges?

The lack of decent work opportunities remains a major challenge for emerging and developing economies. Understanding the barriers that obstruct obtaining decent work is of paramount importance in order to be able to address them. There are many reasons for these barriers, which may be:

  1. The gender gap: in terms of achieving the necessary skills, equal pay, bias, and occupational inequality. As well as discrimination and stereotypes in the workplace.
  2. The spread of unemployment in the society.
  3. Weak social security systems and poverty among workers.
  4. Technological challenges in the labor market, include the development of information and communication technology (ICT), artificial intelligence, and robotics. Which requires the existence of training programs that allow workers to keep pace with this tremendous progress.³

Syrian organizations

Syrian organizations seek to provide decent work, and many Syrian organizations seek to help provide decent and appropriate job opportunities. This allows individuals to work within suitable conditions and environments.

Among these organizations is “Caritas Syria”. This organization provides many services to Syrians, such as providing assistance to the most vulnerable groups so they access the labor market and provide their own work.⁴

To this day, many peoples are still struggling to find jobs that would allow them to reach the minimum necessities of a good life. This is what drives many of them to stick to jobs that do not meet even the most basic human rights and with low wages that are not compatible with the work and expended effort, which creates more disability for them.

Therefore, based on this and the belief of the Uplifting Syrian Women Initiative in the importance of providing decent work and achieving equal access to job opportunities, the initiative offers free training workshops.

It provides learning and training opportunities for everyone remotely and equally, which prepares them to enter the labor market. An example of this is the series of “Freelance” workshops held by the initiative, through which the beneficiaries were introduced to the specializations of self-employment and how to enter this world.

Reem Shtayh

A Success Story: Reem Shetayh

Reem Shtayh

A Success Story: Reem Shetayh

The daughter of the mind and the creative pen.
Get to know the writer Reem Shetayh.”Writing is nothing but an overflow of knowledge and education that the writer has reached” These were the words that Reem Shetayh used to introduce herself as a writer. Out of these words, we will tell you her success story, shedding light on her experience, and some of her life aspects. She is a talented writer who talked about thoughts, politics, and psychology. Reem Shetayh is a Syrian woman who has acquired the Syrian culture along with the American culture since she has lived there for 25 years.

“I have grown up in a calm environment in my beautiful village-Emar Alhosn- surrounded by a cultural and artistic background. I was raised around music, culture, and happiness. My father-Khalil Shetayh- who is an artist, singer, and oud player, was also a great reader and a fan of poetry, writing, and literature.” Shetayh says.

Reem Shetayh and writing

“I was connected to writing in a special bond because it is my skill and one of my tools to discuss many questions and thoughts as it is my safe place to express myself.” Reem Shetayh about her bond with writing. Later, she improved her writing to include deep and varied articles that have been circulating in many newspapers and websites. “These writings have left an effect on the readers through the past ten years, from them I describe myself as a writer.”

Reem Shetayh’s scientific ambition has been a great part of her career since she has employed her own talent and her mental abilities to make a complete print in the new generation minds of university students in the USA. She has worked as a university professor in psychology at three universities in the USA, right now she is a professor at:

  • The Ohio State University.
  • Otterbein University.
  • Columbus State Community College.

The story of her success and achieving the dream

A previous article of hers was published in 2016, she talked in it about self-awareness, and abilities and emphasized the way and the vision. She said: “While you rate your own motivations for success and achieving your goals, you will find out that you have been the first motivation to your success the moment you realized the abilities you have and believed in yourself, you were honest in setting your goals and level. After that, there are others believing in you and probably not before it”. She adds Rumi says: “When you decide to begin the journey, the road will appear.”

This decision does not come true without believing, self-confidence, and the knowledge of self abilities, knowing yourself and your abilities so you can apply them in appropriate ways to your mental, cultural, and creative levels in order to achieve your goals. Be sure that excellence is not a goal itself, but is rather a result of what you have. The thing that will appear clearly along with the results and the personal, practical, and professional success, in addition to your effect on others. The only barrier between us and our goals is our hard work to achieve our goals by any means necessary.

Goals do not come true only by dreaming, patience, or waiting, but also by hard work and insistence. Despair and failure take control of the person only when he gives up and does nothing, failure is only when you tell yourself: “I can not” but you should better try, and the honor of trying is enough.

Writing and the main reason to enter this world

Reem Shetayh says:” In the beginning, writing was a gift and a tool to express me, then it became a project, a mental and cultural project for getting experiences and knowledge, giving a point of view, a quote or an enlightening subject to serve the society. My mental, and cultural interest, trying to pop up human cases, discussing them, and finding solutions for them has been a motivation to get into this wide world. In addition to my big obsession with the knowledge that is the root of every free mind.

The intent to perform this way of thinking in society, investing, and spreading it is not only a decision. Most of the time, the writer gets to a level of knowledge that automatically makes him a partner in all that’s happening in the world. According to this, one can not keep himself away from this knowledge or from this society, he rather should be a real and effective partner in the society rising. In order for him to be like that, what the writer gives must be a result of mental, societal, and human conflict, and free thinking.

The most important goal must be giving benefit to the society with results that raises the mental and moral level, it also must warn people of many imperfections and give solutions that fix and build instead of destroying.”

The difference between literary writing and writing in thoughts and politics

Writing is nothing but a surplus of knowledge, learning, and education that the writer has accumulated. This knowledge is an accumulative process and the result of an open mind. The horizons of odds, questions, and answers have no limit in the human mind. Talent comes from using language and wording so it moves this way of thinking from private to public by transforming it into a sentimental written subject.

Reem says in her published article in 2017:” It means that the gift of writing is a tool to transfer intellect, and this is the relationship between intellect and literature. While literature serves the intellect, the main root is in the discussed intellect in all different social or political subjects, they are all scientific things that are transferred by writing. Writing with all the intellect it carries is a way of knowledge and the free word of societies and human development. The writer through the ages has always worked hard to introduce a reality aiming to it as a goal and to lead this reality to the reader as a human case, wisdom, dialectic, or an educational subject.  The writer appears in the text just as much as he is in the discussed reality. Text is nothing but a soul sign print of the writer of his human presence. “

Reem Shetayh is a Syrian writer and lecturer who presents her country at Arab and Global conferences

The Syrian lecturer and writer:” This means to me a social identity, history and belonging not only a nationality because I carry the genes of this country, its culture and what it gave me a production I could invest to be a person that presents the Syrian woman in the Arab woman conferences. I have lectured at conferences in Syria and I lecture every year in different educational centers in many cities during the summer, they are about varied subjects like psychology, culture, and intellect. “

Difficulties and stumbles I have faced and how I have passed them

I faced some difficulties related to finding time to do many responsibilities along with studying, writing, and work. When I returned to the university in the USA and specialized, my kids were young and I had to create time not wait for it that is why I had to invest time in any place or activity that I do whether for me or my kids, so I used to invest time in studying, keeping up and work later.”

She continues: “My family; my husband, my kids, my parents, and my brothers, they all were very supportive of me and this was so positive. I think that the most thing that helps one to pass difficulties is that he knows what he wants, he goes for it with a strong will and believes in himself and his abilities to make his ambition come true, especially for women, if she has appreciation then she finds many solutions.”

Achieving success in appropriate circumstances

Conditions show what abilities a person has but do not create them. If a person has abilities he realizes and he has ambition, then the right conditions appear and help him to achieve what he wants. Mainly we make our present and future with what we admire, work, and want.  Except for war conditions and changes that make it difficult. As the right conditions may come to a person who does not have ambition or abilities. But conditions won’t do a thing in this case.

There is an American saying: “You can take a horse to the river but you can not make him drink.” If he does not want to, he may stop and not try although having the right conditions if it is right to say. The bottom line is that the conditions are important in the case of ambition, desire, and will availability so the success is worth it.

Reem Shetayh’s future goals and expectations

To be a part of people’s awareness about psychology, psychological disorders, cure importance, and knowledge. I seek to make cultural and scientific changes in my country by entering the educational process because it helps to spread secularism, accept others and work on legal changes in this context. “

In conclusion, the writer Reem Shetayh, in an article exhibition of hers under the title “Value and Quality”, says:  “There should be an approach of social value with the intellectual value of a human and his moral level. Otherwise, we will end up with a community that values the ascending and corrupted people, it marginalizes the elite and the real creative people. Thus, there is a need for such an approach in our society in order to value people -men and women- according to intellect and morals. When this begins, the intellect leaders regardless of their varied majors become pioneers in making positive changes that definitely will lead to a better future.

Selective Sound Sensitivity Syndrome (Misophonia)

Selective Sound Sensitivity Syndrome (Misophonia)

Selective Sound Sensitivity Syndrome (Misophonia)

Selective Sound Sensitivity Syndrome (Misophonia)

As strange as a syndrome called selective sound sensitivity syndrome is, many people suffer from it. What is this syndrome and what are its causes?

Are you disturbed by the sounds of chewing or even breathing around you?  Do these sounds cause you stress and tantrums?  Do you feel that the suffering has no end and that those around you are unaware that your out-of-control reactions are real and not exaggerated?

If the answer is “yes”, then you have selective sound sensitivity syndrome, sometimes referred to as “misophonia”, which we will talk about in this article.

What is selective sound sensitivity syndrome or misophonia?

Misophonia is a syndrome in which certain sounds trigger emotional or physiological responses that some might find unreasonable. The reactions of those who experience it may range from anger and annoyance to panic and the need to flee.¹ Individuals with “misophonia” or selective sound sensitivity syndrome are often triggered by oral sounds;¹ the noises that someone makes when they eat, breathe, or even chew.  Other adverse sounds include the sound of a keyboard, a finger tapping, or the sound of windshield wipers.

It may sometimes reach the point that even small, repetitive motions are the cause when someone fidgets or wiggles their feet. People with “misophonia” believe that they often interact with visual stimuli that accompany sounds. They may also respond intensely to repetitive motions. Misophonia can develop at any age, although research indicates that it is most likely to develop in the early teen years. Misophonia is more common among women, as 55% to 83% of all cases are happening in women.²

The question that arises is, how do we know that we have this syndrome, and what are its symptoms?

Symptoms of misophonia

The following symptoms, which researchers have divided into emotional, physical, and behavioral reactions based on how the person responds to trigger sounds, can assist us in determining whether we have this syndrome:

  1. Emotional reactions: includes the feelings that the person experiences and they can be intense or overwhelming. For many of those affected, these feelings escalate quickly. That means irritation can soon turn into intense anger. The emotional reactions are anger, anxiety, disgust, fear, and irritation.
  2. Physical reactions: includes automatic self-protective processes, most of which are similar to our normal responses when we are in a dangerous or frightening situation. For example blood pressure increases, chest pressure or tightness, Goosebumps, increased heart rates, and sweating.
  3. Behavioral reactions: includes actions that occur in response to trigger sounds, and they are usually impulse- or instinct-driven. This means that a person with selective sound sensitivity syndrome may not have complete control over them, such as violent reactions towards the people or things that cause those sounds.  However, these behavioral reactions are not common among people with the syndrome.²

In severe cases, “misophonia” may lead to social isolation and avoidance of situations in which trigger sounds may occur frequently.¹ This syndrome can be dangerous as it might limit your life and social relationships. Those with “misophonia” have been known to develop anticipatory anxiety when experiencing situations in which trigger sounds are present. For example, the individual with “misophonia” may avoid restaurants, or may eat separately from their partner, family, or roommates.

Causes of selective sound sensitivity syndrome

Experts do not know the causes of “misophonia”. Yet, they suspect that these causes are a combination of factors, such as differences in brain structure, and genetic factors. Research shows that people with selective sound sensitivity syndrome are more likely to have specific differences in brain structure and activity.²  One of those differences is that there are more connections and activities in and between certain areas of the brain. The affected brain areas control how we process sounds and manage emotions. Hearing and emotions are part of the brain’s built-in self-protection system. Therefore, a person learns to associate emotions such as anger, disgust, and fear with threatening situations.

So, the brain of an individual with misophonia responds to trigger sounds like it responds to a threat and danger, which leads to the reactions or symptoms we discussed earlier.

Treatment

Living with selective sound sensitivity syndrome, or misophonia, can be difficult, but it is essential for individuals with this condition to seek professional help to effectively manage their symptoms. Although there is no cure for this syndrome, treatments such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and voice therapy may help manage symptoms and improve quality of life.³

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) helps individuals identify the negative thoughts and behaviors related to this condition and face them. Whereas, sound therapy uses white noise or other calming sounds to mask stimulating sounds. Raising awareness of selective sound sensitivity syndrome is critical for individuals with this syndrome to ensure that they receive the support they need to have a fulfilling life. By doing so, we can help reduce the impact of this syndrome on people’s lives and improve their life in general.

In conclusion, it is very important to understand that the reactions of those around us may not be an exaggeration, which is the case of people with selective sound sensitivity syndrome or “misophonia”, the anger of that person may be beyond his control.

In addition, understanding ourselves and our reactions, as well as avoiding anger or blaming ourselves is crucial. Our growing understanding of our behavior and the behaviors of those around us is essential for our psychological peace and for a better life.

Resorting to Fortune-telling, Witchcraft, and Clairvoyants

Resorting to Fortune-telling, Witchcraft, and Clairvoyants

Resorting to Fortune-telling, Witchcraft, and Clairvoyants

Resorting to Fortune-telling, Witchcraft, and Clairvoyants

The need to stay away from fortune-telling and witchcraft can be summed up in this sentence: “Astrologers lie, even if they tell the truth”.

Predicting and knowing what the future holds for us has been and remains one of the most tempting thoughts for the human soul. As a result, clairvoyance and witchcraft accompanied many civilizations. And the words of fortune-tellers and soothsayers were taken into account in most decisions. Even those related to self-determination. And it remains a matter of interest to this day.

The Origin of Clairvoyance and Witchcraft

Fortune-telling or “astrology” is known as an innate curiosity and desire in humans. As a result of the individual’s sense of curiosity about the future. Astrology arose because of the sense of security it gives and the ability to reduce fear of the unknown in one way or another, even if it is considered temporary or deceptive.

The idea of seeing the future in a cup of coffee, figuring out how compatible someone is from the letter order of their name, or knowing our own and other people’s traits just by knowing their date of birth can seem charming and fun.

Fortune-telling, Witchcraft, and Clairvoyance In the Past

People have relied on fortune-telling in determining important matters. Including the time of a river flooding, the time of its drying, and the eruption of volcanoes. In addition to the quality of crops, and the cure for diseases that they believed were the work of evil spirits entering the human body. And a means for establishing rituals to address and worship God.¹

The Spread of Clairvoyance and Witchcraft In Our Current Era

The phenomenon of fortune-telling and witchcraft is very widespread in our current era. As it is surrounded by a kind of sanctity and secrecy. Despite its different designations and methods. Hearing the morning horoscopes and knowing what events they will reveal and predict has become a daily morning habit. And a necessity for some before doing any work. Even life and fateful issues. Such as choosing a life partner. This has become dependent on the compatibility of the horoscopes of the two parties. And the point of view of astrologers in the matter.

It is highly noticeable that television channels invite astrologers and clairvoyants to meet with them on most social occasions. In order to take their advice and predictions on crucial issues. And it does not end here; having the media platforms buzzing with their statements and ideas.

The Negative Effects of Fortune-telling, Witchcraft, and Clairvoyance on Societies

Given the prevailing and difficult conditions that people suffer from. Resorting to a fortune teller or astrologer is desirable. Due to its convenience and their belief that its results will be hearing comforting predictions. That may make the person happy and stress-free. Since women in our societies live under difficult circumstances. And expectations that predetermine their choices and arrange their lives. They will, for sure, be more inclined to these matters. A woman needs to hear that everything will be fine. And that may lead her to seek astrology and witchcraft as the solution to her problems.²

These fortune-tellers -regardless of how their names differ- have a popular and mass base that believes in them and their ideas. They constitute a critical focus that may contribute to the spread of false negative rumors and thoughts. This has been proven by various events. In the event of the February 6th, 2023 earthquake that struck Syria and Turkey. They constituted a negative factor in intimidating the population when they spread incorrect rumors. Most of their statements were devoid of any scientific or factual basis. Its goal was to reach the masses and increase their fame only, regardless of the results.

The large spread of such phenomena threatens societies and tackling. Such phenomena come by adopting science, knowledge, and awareness to protect ourselves from drowning in these thoughts and false rumors. This has a direct relationship with the psychological state and the way societies think, compelling us to draw more attention to this issue in order to prompt people to think positively, come up with logical solutions (regardless of the circumstances), and find safety in their actions and words and not from the sayings of the astrologer.³

Astronomy and Astrology

The culture of linking astrology with astronomy spread and the astrologer was considered a specialist in the study of space and celestial bodies. However, there are fundamental differences between the two concepts. Astronomy is the science that studies bodies, planets, and space. It divides the sky into 12 astronomical constellations, which are the constellations known to all of us.

Consequently, the birth of children on a specific day of the year makes them a special zodiac sign within this period, as it is determined according to the position of specific star groups around the sun. However, it completely denies the existence of a relationship between the zodiac sign and specific characteristics possessed by those born to this sign. It also denies the idea of the effects of any planet entering this astral group and its reflection, good or bad, on those born in these placements. Not to mention that the astronomer’s studies extend to the study of chemistry, quantum physics, and relativistic theories. Therefore, their statements are based on scientific and accurate experiments.⁴

In conclusion, we have to draw attention to the need to stay away from the words of fortune-tellers and not to rely on clairvoyance and witchcraft in our daily lives given the negative effects it may have on us. It is also better to ensure the authenticity of our sources of information carefully, away from heresies and rumors.
