Endometriosis- Symptoms and treatment

What is “endometriosis” and how does it affect the daily life of women? What are its symptoms? How can women live with it or prevent it?

‏Pain expresses itself in the human body in different ways, and the intensity of pain varies from one person to another. According to what is known as the “pain threshold”, which in turn depends on the frequency of exposure to pain, in addition to the difference in age and the frequency of the painful stimulus. Whether we are men or women, we suffer pain on different levels. Some women, for example, have a “pain threshold” that makes them more resilient and adaptable to menstrual pain.

‏The woman may suffer severe pain that forces her to take time off from work. However, it should not be surprising if we learned that she suffers from symptoms of what is called “endometriosis”.

‏Endometriosis and its symptoms

‏During menstruation, when the fetus is not implanted into the uterus, the lining detaches and is excreted from the body via menstrual blood. But in the disease called “endometriosis” there is a tissue similar to the tissue that lines the uterus that grows outside the uterus usually in the abdominal cavity. This tissue out of the uterus responds to the changes in the menstrual cycle just like the real endometrium.¹

‏Endometriosis has symptoms. Most particularly:
‏Pain in the lower back and abdomen, which is extreme during menstruation in a way that prevents women from practicing normal daily activities. In addition to feeling nauseous and vomiting, and bleeding between periods. Women with endometriosis suffer from constipation or diarrhea, and difficulty getting pregnant.

‏What are the causes of endometriosis?

‏There are several possible scientifically unconfirmed theories and hypotheses about the causes of endometriosis. Among the most important of these theories are:

  1. ‏Imbalance in the immune system.
  2. An imbalance in the secretion of some hormones.
  3. ‏Menstrual blood comes out in the opposite direction to its normal course through the fallopian tubes and its descent into the pelvic cavity, especially on the ovaries and behind the uterus.
  4. Post-operative cleaning and scraping of the uterine cavity (Curettage ).²

‏There are several factors that increase the risk of developing endometriosis, such as:

  • ‏Never having children.
  • ‏When the period starts at a young age.
  • ‏Delayed menopause.
  • ‏Short menstrual cycles; For example, less than 27 days.
  • ‏Heavy menstrual bleeding and lengthy periods that last more than 7 days.
  • ‏Increased levels of the hormone “estrogen” in the body, or exposure to the hormone “estrogen” for a longer period.
  • ‏A low body mass index (BMI).
  • ‏One or more female relatives (mother, aunt, or sister) suffer from endometriosis.
  • ‏Any pathological conditions impede blood exit from the body during periods.
  • ‏Reproductive system disorders.³

‏Endometriosis is a long-lasting disease. All associated treatments aim to control its symptoms and limit its side effects. As women, it is not easy for us to live with persistent pain, which intensifies on certain days a month and prevents us from carrying out our daily activities. However, women who suffer from this disease must follow some treatment methods.

Treatment of endometriosis

‏The disease may be treated with medication or surgery, depending on symptoms, lesions, desired outcome, and patient choice. Steroidal contraceptive pills, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, and pain relievers are also commonly used treatments for this disease. They should all be accurately prescribed and carefully monitored to avoid potential side effects that could cause problems. ‏Medical treatments for endometriosis focus either on lowering estrogen or raising progesterone. This is in order to alter the hormonal environments that promote endometriosis.⁴

‏As for women who are not able to seek medical treatment, and have been diagnosed with “simple endometriosis”. They can resort to some simple home remedies and help relieve pelvic pain and feel relieved through the following:

  • ‏Using heat treatments. Heat pads, hot water bottles, and warm baths are a great ways to relax pelvic muscles and reduce pain.
  • ‏Massage the abdomen and pelvis with castor oil, because of its usefulness in relieving cramps and pain.
  • ‏Resorting to anti-inflammatory herbs and foods; Turmeric and warm ginger tea have anti-inflammatory properties.
  • ‏Likewise, foods with diuretic properties, bone soup, and healthy seeds may help comfort abdominal pain.
  • Over-the-counter anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen and naproxen sodium can also be taken for rapid improvement.

‏If an ounce of prevention is better than an ounce of treatment for women who are susceptible to endometriosis, then prevention is linked to the need for early diagnosis of the disease. Also, it is associated with increasing awareness about it, and paying attention to women’s health to prevent its abnormal development.

‏In conclusion, it should be noted that the various institutions and companies should pay attention to work; Taking care of the general health of its female workers. By providing a safe and comfortable environment at work, and taking into account their emergency health conditions, in accordance with regulations and legislation related to women’s rights at work.

Nabila Al-Nabulsi

Nabila Al-Nabulsi- A Woman of History

Nabila Al-Nabulsi, the Nobel mom of the Syrian Drama’s seasons.

With her full face and tender eyes, Nabila Al-Nabulsi left traces of the kind and reassuring mother in the collective memory of Syrians and everyone who watched her. Al-Nabulsi embodied an outstanding artistic stature so unique in the history of Syrian drama, with so many roles, and various, on-point performances mixed with professionalism and sincerity of feelings, which reached the hearts of her audience from her own heart.

Nabila Al-Nabulsi, a captivating presence since the start

Nabila Al-Nabulsi was born in 1949,¹ and she lost her father at a very young age, which prompted her to go through the hardships of life pretty early, as she worked as a nurse, and later as a typist until she entered the field of advertising at the Faculty of Fine Arts in Damascus.

The beginnings of Nabila Al-Nabulsi in the world of cinema and television

Then she was debuted by the director “Ghassan Jabri” in one of her first television roles in the series “Tears of Angels”, after which her TV projects followed successively Nabila Al-Nabulsi got closer to the people through television.

Although she didn’t play the affectionate mother in all her roles, she presented a variety of different characters, proving that she is capable of steering away from the archetypal comedy character. For example, in the series “Qanun Wa Laken” her role challenged stereotypes In the series “Dimashq, Ya Basma Hazan”, which is based on the famous novel by Elfa Al-Idlibi.

The heroic mother wherever she’s at

What gives Nabulsi such a strong and beautiful presence is that she is a reflection of every woman we see around us as if she somehow summed up the spirit of the Syrian woman. The Syrian mother, presented by Nabila, was no longer confined to her traditional style, rather than that, she showed us the mother as a strong and influential person, and this was embodied in many of her roles such as in “The Four Seasons” and “Not a Mirage”.

These works of art are engraved in our memories despite her death which took her away from us not so many years ago, yet her gentle features remain, and her strong, affectionate voice is consistent, and it forever serves as an embodiment of our mothers, and of Syrian women as a whole.

Nabila Al-Nabulsi’s most important roles

The career of the late actress Nabila Al-Nabulsi has a big balance, and she appeared in different acting styles. In theater, her most prominent performances were: “A Moment Please”, “A Man in Charge Needed”, “The People Below”, “Youth of our Times” and “Spider Webs”.

In cinema, which highlighted her talent and played a major turning point in her life, she presented, in addition to the works mentioned earlier in this article: “Shame”, “Another Face of Love”, “Women for Winter”, “Smiling in Tears”, “Youth in Distress”, “Love Girls”, “My Teardrops, Tears, and My Smile”, “Naji Al-Ali”, “Amouna Lives Alone”, and “Ghawar James Bond”.

As for drama, the late Nabila Al-Nabulsi had an abundance of projects, and we cannot mention them all, but we will present to you some of them out of appreciation and respect.

Nabila Al-Nabulsi showcased almost all kinds of drama, from series of the Levantine social environment, such as “Hammam Al-Qishani” and “Layali Al-Salihiya”, to various drama projects such as “The Cave of the Maghreb”, “Al-Farari”, “The Swing”, “Dreams That Don’t Die”, “The Orange Dream”, “The Orphan”, “The House of the Family”, “Hearts in Balance” and “Hidden Hatred”, and certainly, her unforgettable role in the series “The Four Seasons”, the artist Nabila Al-Nabulsi also had participated in many radio projects.

The passing of Nabila Al-Nabulsi

The artist, Nabila Al-Nabulsi, passed away on the 29th of June, 2010, at the age of 62, after suffering from illness,³ her passing was considered a significant loss for the Arab world and the Syrian art scene, and her projects are still broadcasted on screens.

The late Nabila al-Nabulsi will remain with us forever with her grace and her heartwarming trace, her talent that accompanied the maturity of the Syrian dramatic experience, and reached together with it to the pinnacle of generosity dramatically and humanly.

Clean and Affordable Energy- Sustainable development goals in Syria

Clean and Affordable Energy

Clean and Affordable Energy - Sustainable development goals in Syria

As the ones who inherited this planet, we must preserve the rights of future generations in the non-renewable energies of the planet. From here came the idea of sustainability. This idea is definitely not a priority for countries that suffer from harsh conditions such as Syria, as environmental problems generally come last in the list of priorities. However, since environmental problems are among the most urgent and dangerous problems of the current century, they have been included in the sustainable development goals in Syria. The seventh of the sustainable development goals in Syria states: Securing clean and renewable energy at reasonable prices.

There are many questions that come to mind regarding clean energy, such as the following:

  1. What is clean energy?
  2. What is the need to secure clean energy given other pressing problems?
  3. What are Syria’s plans to achieve this goal?

We will answer all of these questions.

What is clean energy?

Clean and renewable energy is the one that does not harm the environment. It is also renewable and inexhaustible, unlike most current energy sources such as fossil fuels, and gas that is subject to depletion in the future. The most common sources of clean energy are water, wind, and solar energy.  Some countries are also trying to extract clean energy from the Earth’s core.¹

Applicable clean energy sources in Syria include Solar, wind, and hydroelectric energies. But the problem is that the process of turning to rely on these energies is a very expensive one. So providing them at affordable rates was part of the goal. In view of the great cost of turning to renewable energy, it had to be accomplished in gradual steps and over many years, and this is what Syria is trying to do.

What is the importance of this energy?

All over the world, there are some people who are questioning the importance of environmental problems and the investments directed toward solving these problems. In Syria in particular, these doubts abound because they believe that there are more important and deserving issues to invest in, such as the trend towards reconstruction. Therefore, it is necessary to note the need to invest in clean and renewable energy, and the size of the environmental problem in Syria.

Syria, like other countries in the world, is suffering from global warming and climate change, which is increasing every year. The director of the “FAO ” (Food and Agriculture Organization) office in Syria also stated that the Syrian environment is suffering greatly from a natural phenomenon represented in the increasing droughts in large areas of the country, especially the central regions of the Badia. The environment is also suffering from effects related to human activities, such as unregulated hunting, logging, wasting water resources, toxic gas emissions from factories, and many other practices that harm the environment. Part of these problems arise in the loss of biodiversity, the loss of natural habitats, the depletion of natural resources, and some agricultural practices that are harmful to the environment.²

In addition to the environmental problems that the whole world suffers from, such as global warming caused by gaseous emissions that are usually caused by the extraction and use of non-renewable energy around the world. The Syrian war in 2011 played a major role in exacerbating the environmental problems that the country suffers from.  New problems arose, such as the overuse of natural resources, deforestation, and the use of forests for heating in light of the lack of fuel. In addition to the unplanned overuse of groundwater, as well as pollution resulting from illegal oil refining operations that led to groundwater pollution. Finally, pollution from mines and unexploded remnants of war.²

We can conclude from the things mentioned above that the problems which threaten the environment in Syria are many, and of course, they cannot all be solved by using clean and renewable energy, but it is an important step that can solve a large part of the environmental crisis, reducing the gas emissions that cause global warming, and reducing water and air pollution.

We all have to realize that environmental problems affect our lives and the lives of future generations. As the problems and risks associated with this deterioration resulting from climate change play a major challenge in the process of sustainable development and the achievement of its goals. This is because of its direct impact on the means of life and human health.²

In addition, the trend towards solving environmental problems and investing in clean energy has many positive side effects, such as providing new job opportunities and solving many service problems in our society, especially the electricity problem in light of fuel shortage.  We can say, then, that the trend towards clean energy and providing it at reasonable prices will produce positive results on all levels.

What are the measures taken to secure clean energy at reasonable prices in Syria?

Although there is still a long way to achieve this goal, the efforts made to secure clean energy in Syria so far cannot be denied. In light of the Syrian war, the electricity sector was one of the most affected sectors, as many power plants were damaged. In addition to the lack of fuel needed to operate these stations, which resulted in the following: Syria is currently suffering from an electricity crisis.

In these circumstances, Syria found a way to start over, relying on clean energy in order to solve the electrical and environmental crises. Syrian Prime Minister Hussein Arnous stated, “The process of rehabilitation and modernization of the sector should not be limited to returning to the situation it was before the war, but rather work should be done to rebuild the sector according to new and modern foundations that keep pace with the global developments that this sector is witnessing in accordance with the possible limits, especially in regard to clean electric energies and renewable energy.

Based on this goal, many projects related to the provision of electricity from photovoltaic energy are currently being worked on. The Syrian Minister of Electricity explained that his ministry has drawn up a plan to add 2,000 megawatts of renewable energy sources by 2030. Work is also underway to implement photovoltaic power plants in various Syrian cities, including Aleppo, Homs, and Damascus, with the aim of supplying industrial cities.³ These projects are considered a promising beginning to achieve this sustainable development goal.

In order to support all projects that aim to adopt clean energy, whether in the domestic, commercial, industrial, agricultural or service sectors, the Syrian Presidency issued a law for the creation of a fund to support the use of renewable energies and raise energy efficiency with the aim of contributing to the expansion and support of renewable energy projects.

The fund provides interest-free loans to support projects related to clean energy in all sectors, as it will eventually reduce the consumption of oil derivatives.⁴ This fund also flows into the second part of this goal; it will provide the possible financial facilities to obtain clean energy at affordable prices. All these steps and projects show the extent of Syria’s interest in relying on clean energy and achieving this goal. They are also promising steps towards a country that relies on clean and renewable energy.

Environmental problems are no less important than other problems faced by Syrian society, and each member of society has an important role to play in preserving the environment, as the real impact begins with simple steps taken by each individual, such as regulating the consumption of plastic, orderly purchase, not overconsumption, in addition to recycling.

The Uplifting Syrian Women initiative encourages all individuals to reduce practices that harm the environment and preserve all resources allocated to this goal, hoping to achieve this goal and live in a safe and suitable society for all.

Najah Khamasmieh

A Success Story: Najah Khamasmie

Najah Khamasmieh

A Success Story: Najah Khamasmie

Who is Najah Khamasmie, and how would you like to introduce yourself to the Uplifting Syrian Women community?

Najah Khamasmie is a Syrian-German woman, a writer, and a motivator. After I arrived in Europe in 2012 with my husband and children over time, I have understood the difference between being a female and a society lady and being the master of my decisions and life in the world of numbers and choices. I love very much the combination of the warmth and passion of the East and the discipline and organization of the West. In my new identity, I find balance, confidence, and a renewed ability for consistent planning.

How did you take your first steps in the field of social media, motivational videos, and later on, podcasting with your daughter?

Around ten years ago, I started writing articles on social media, which I later compiled into two books, one of which was published in three languages. However, writing alone wasn’t enough during the time of COVID-19, as people in their isolation needed a voice and visual representation. Facial expressions and tone of voice can communicate ideas with more robust and more influential impressions. Encouraged by my family, especially my daughter, I began creating motivational videos.

The beginning wasn’t easy for someone used to writing silently, but in this change, I found a different presence and a new message. During my meetings and lectures with families in Europe, I noticed that dialogue between generations was often absent for various reasons. Therefore, my daughter wanted us to share our experience of intergenerational dialogue through a podcast, and although we’re still at the beginning, it has been a wonderful experience. I also consider it as documenting a different intellectual period with my daughter.

How important is it to be a successful and supportive mother, and how does that impact your family, especially your daughter?

Who is a successful mother, and by what standards? Is it measured by achievements outside the home or within it? Is it evaluated based on income level or social status? Many questions!

But for me, a successful mother is one who finds reassurance and joy and manages to transmit them to her family. She can only reach that state by realizing her own potential. Only then can she support each family member to achieve their own self-fulfillment and happiness. She wouldn’t wait for any of them to accomplish what she couldn’t accomplish. She will also rejoice in their individuality and encourage them to be who they want to be.

As for my daughter, I always send her a consistent message: “Let your presence be strong and irreplaceable.” I don’t want her to expend her energies solely in the pursuit of equality but rather to discover her own strengths to prove her presence and make it effective and entrenched.

What about your journey to surviving cancer? What is its role in mapping your life and how do you live with it?

My experience with cancer resembles, to some extent, my experience of forced alienation, as if one suddenly feels they have lost everything in an instant! The difference between the two experiences is that during the migration experience, I hoped, in the early years, that time would pass quickly, following the principle of “time will pass”. But with cancer, I held on to life tenaciously. I no longer wanted time to “pass quickly” or in that way. Waking up in the morning became a reason to celebrate, as it meant I had survived and could live for an extra day.

In my current experience, I appreciate not giving up and have realized that God’s strength shines during our vulnerability. At one point during the treatment journey, I lost the ability to speak and walk, and the pain was intense. I didn’t try to appear strong; I simply focused on continuing and made God my source of strength.

My family members learned to be strong during my time of vulnerability. While we believe that our children learn and take strength from our strength, in fact, they learn strength and wisdom in our time of vulnerability, and I was experiencing the joy of seeing them mature lovingly. I also used to live a very healthy life out of fear of disease, but today I realized that fear is the disease itself! Human beings, by the grace of God, are able to accomplish things they cannot believe or imagine being able to.

I still live a healthy life without any “fear”, but with a sense of responsibility towards the blessing of health. Time has become sacred to me, there is no time for grief, negativity, and attention to gossip. It is a time of joy and the realization of what we must achieve.

What difficulties did you face? And how did you overcome them?

First, I began to call things by their right names. In my opinion, there are “difficulties” and there are “obstacles.” Difficulties are those you face within yourself, such as laziness, hesitation, procrastination, forgetfulness, boredom, negative thoughts, stereotypes, and fear. You must confront and deal with these things seriously, decisively, and powerfully every day and every hour of your life. Work needs constant diligence.

Obstacles are negative words and destructive criticism from others, undervaluing your work no matter how good it is, simply because you’re a woman, lack of interaction, and so on. One should not engage with obstacles or confront them but rather ignore them and surpass them wisely, as surrendering to them will take a long time to get out of.

Therefore, I deal with difficulties with patience, strength, and positivity while ignoring obstacles to preserve my energy.

What advice do you have for those who are still searching for their way?

Learn from others and profit from their experiences, but do not compare yourself to them. There is no specific time, no age, and no circumstances to start; start with the small possibilities available at that moment, start.

Search within your strengths, and you will find your path. Do not underestimate what you possess, but be aware that everything given to you by God has a purpose and intention.

When you feel joy and reassurance, it means you are on the right path. Surrender is rejected, whether it is surrendering to the success of something and stopping there or surrendering to failure and not attempting again. We may fail in a certain task, but that does not mean we are failures, as God did not give us the spirit of failure.

What is the difference between a successful person and an ordinary person?

There is no ordinary person; there is only a person who has not yet discovered their uniqueness. It’s good to love ourselves, but it’s optimal to love what is best for us. We need to ask ourselves, what do I want for myself to be better? How can I achieve that? And why do I want those things?

These questions redirect me whenever I deviate from my purpose and vision for myself. The person who has discovered their uniqueness no longer seeks appreciation and admiration from others; instead, they seek inner peace and satisfaction. We are all influenced by psychological and life factors that may change our opinions accordingly. Therefore, it is incorrect to measure my success based on the opinions of others. Instead, I should measure it based on the results of my actions.

Everything starts from within, as a person is driven by his thoughts. Let’s make our thoughts positive, motivational, and curious, seeking alternative solutions and innovative, effective approaches.  Then we will assert our presence with gentleness and strength. The question remains, why do I want what I want? And here lies the uniqueness.

What are your dreams and upcoming goals?

Before I talk about the future, I need to look at the past. In the past, all the professions I worked in were characterized by possessing the spirit of joy and beauty. I worked as a web designer and later in an agency importing wedding dresses and haute couture. All of these endeavors involved joy and beauty.

Today, I work in social media and writing, and I hope to achieve more joy and spread more beauty. We need a lot of real beauty in all aspects of life. I hope my first novel succeeds, as it is my first work of fiction after writing and publishing motivational articles. The future has always held many surprises for me, which may initially appear as endings but are actually beautiful and powerful beginnings, thanks to God’s blessings. So, I feel that the future is waiting for me and surprising me, and I surprise it in return. I don’t have long-term plans. After displacement, illness, and significant material and spiritual losses, I have prioritized living with joy and hope.

My main goal is to continue with joy and hope. Like a small spring coming from the mountains, it may change its course due to a large rock or a cliff, but it continues, leaving a beautiful refreshing trail wherever it passes.

What is voice-over?

It is also called “off-camera commentary”, in which the voice is the main tool. It can be in radio, television production, football, and many other fields. In off-camera commentary, a pre-written text is read, and the person who performs this task does not have to be present at the event location. In other cases, the presenter performs voice-over on live shows such as sports games or award ceremonies. In documentaries or news bulletins, the commentary is recorded in advance. It is also used in video games, voicemails, and advertisements.

What skills do you need for a voice-over?

In order to become a successful voice-over artist, one must have several skills, including:

  • Proper use of vocal cords.
  • Breath control.
  • The proper transition between voice layers.
  • Correct pronunciation.

And with practice and training these skills will improve.

It is worth noting that some daily practices of the commentary have a direct impact on their work. For example, avoiding hot foods with strong flavors that irritate the vocal cords, as well as drinking cold water. The most important thing is patience and commitment because continuity comes from commitment.

How to start practicing voice-over as a freelancer?

Like any profession, one should not practice it until they have sufficient knowledge about it. Therefore, you must search for the requirements of this profession and figure out if it is suitable for you. If you want to take it as a freelance job, you need to make sure that the wages are suitable for our living conditions.

Personal experience

Have you ever wondered about the owner of your favorite character’s voice in animated programs? Yes, these are people who have chosen voice-over as a career in their lives.

Like Dahouk Kasem, one of the people who have experienced this field and it became part of their lives. Here is what Dahouk told us about her experience in this field:

At first, I am always asked about the reason I chose the commentary and whether working in this field is talent-related.  I will answer these questions with honesty according to my humble experience. Since I was a little girl, I was looking for my talent at school because I was not good at any artistic or athletic field. However, I discovered my ability to control my voice layers and change them by chance. With training and effort to develop this talent, I reached high levels of progress, deserving the title of “voice-over artist.” Despite that, I still need to train more to obtain the honor of the title of “professional voice-over.”

I do not want you to take my words as a source of pessimism or fear of entering the field. Instead, let it be a motivation for you to improve, practice, and try to reach – as many have done before you – the title of professionalism.

At the beginning of working in any of the freelancing fields, the opportunity to win your first client is difficult. And your earnings are not enough or even stable enough to suffice as your main income. However, having a rich portfolio where you showcase your passion and talent in any of the fields that are widespread at the moment, as well as personal marketing of this talent and showing it on social media platforms, will create a name for you and provide you with countless opportunities. Recently, I got the opportunity to work in a company where I have always dreamed of working only because of my personal marketing of myself and daring to show my talent.

Just be bold, passionate, and patient and commit to your plan to achieve what you aspired to.

postmenopausal osteoporosis

Postmenopausal Osteoporosis (PO)

Postmenopausal Osteoporosis

Postmenopausal Osteoporosis (PO)

Postmenopausal Osteoporosis, which can affect the quality of life, is considered the most common disease in women after menopause.¹ The World Health Organization defines “menopause” as the ceasing of menstruation for 12 consecutive months with the absence of etiological reasons. During the transitional period of menopause, women can experience many unpleasant symptoms, such as hot flashes, night sweats, and mood swings.

What is postmenopausal osteoporosis?

Bone fragility or osteoporosis is a multifactor metabolic disorder that affects the bones. A decrease in the mineral density of the bones and a subtle deterioration of the bone’s tissue structure are observed in osteoporosis, which leads to weakening in the bone’s structure and therefore bone fragility.¹ In this case, the bones are more prone to fractures.

Osteoporosis is called a “silent disease” because the weakening and loss of bone structure occur initially without any symptoms. Usually, people with osteoporosis don’t realize they have it until their bones are so weak that a sudden strain, bump, or fall leads to a fracture or collapse of one of the vertebrae. Collapsed vertebrae can be felt or noticed in the beginning by severe back pain, loss of height, or spinal deformities such as stooped posture.²

Menopause is the most common cause of osteoporosis. Therefore, osteoporosis is more dangerous and more common in females. Women are more likely to develop osteoporosis after menopause due to the hormonal changes they go through to accommodate the natural changes that occur in the body. The fluctuation of hormones is accompanied by fluctuating estrogen levels, which decrease. Estrogen is a hormone that helps maintain bone health by slowing natural bone deterioration. So when estrogen decreases after menopause, that greatly accelerates bone loss.³

What are the causes of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women?

after menopause, and over time,  a decrease in the level of certain hormones in the body (such as estradiol) can lead to osteoporosis. This occurs in two phases:

  • The first phase: Begins at the age of menopause, and it occurs due to a lack of estrogen, as we mentioned earlier. Which leads to a disproportionate increase in bone resorption compared to its formation. This stage can be defined as the bone loss associated with menopause.
  • The second phase: It appears after 4-8 years, in which there is a slower continuous loss of many bones in the body. It is mainly due to the decline in bone formation, caused by aging. This phase can be seen in men as well.¹

What are the methods of prevention and treatment of PO?

It is possible to start taking preventive measures against osteoporosis which affects postmenopausal women, starting from childhood or adolescence. Preventive measures include:

  • It is recommended to reduce coffee and soft drinks as they interfere with calcium absorption.
  • It is also recommended to reduce alcohol intake because it increases the loss of bone mass.⁴
  • A balanced diet rich in vitamin D and calcium must also be maintained.

Certain lifestyle changes may help prevent osteoporosis. Including:

  • Sports exercises: Some types of exercise (such as resistance training, balance exercises, and weightlifting) help maintain bone health.
  • Exposure to sunlight regularly, as the sunlight helps produce vitamin D, which is important for maintaining bone health.
  • Weight management: Preventing obesity helps maintain bone strength.
  • Avoid smoking, as this can help reduce the risk of osteoporosis.³

As for treatment, there are many medications and hormonal treatments to reduce bone loss and stimulate the formation of new bone, including the following:

  • Bisphosphonate: It is used orally and helps reduce osteoporosis.
  • Denosumab: an intravenous drug that reduces the risk of bone fractures.
  • Abaloparatide: A bone-building medicine that is given as an injection.
  • Estrogen therapy: Prevents osteoporosis by reducing bone deterioration.³

And many other therapeutic medicines have proven effective in reducing the effects of osteoporosis in women and reducing the risk of fractures resulting from it.

The appropriate medication and dosage are determined by the doctor, so we do not recommend taking any medications without consulting your orthopedist.

How can someone overcome and deal with osteoporosis?

If you suffer from osteoporosis, it is very important to avoid any falls that could lead to a fracture. Falls can be avoided indoors by:

  1. Keeping the home floor clean and free of clutter.
  2. Ensure that the lighting is bright enough to enable you to see your surroundings. .
  3. Some walking aids, such as crutches, can also be used.

Also, to avoid deterioration of the condition, it is important to follow up with the doctor to take the necessary medications, follow the appropriate diet, and practice some sports activities that the doctor may recommend.

If you live with or know someone who suffers from osteoporosis:

  • Ensure that they take the medications prescribed by the doctor.
  • Help them do some exercise.
  • Help them keep their house floor clean. Ensure that it is free of any slippery materials or scattered items such as electrical wires and others.
  • Help them with any physical activity that may be difficult for them, such as walking.
  • Finally, and most importantly, provide them psychological assistance and be there for them.

We, as the Uplifting Syrian Women initiative, encourage everyone, especially women, to take preventive measures to avoid osteoporosis after menopause, as it is a very common disease. We also advise women who are going through menopause to conduct the necessary examinations, such as checking bone density regularly.

Finally, we advise people with osteoporosis to keep in touch with their supervising doctor and to commit to all their instructions and recommendations. We wish everyone well recovery.

Disguised Illiteracy

Disguised Illiteracy

Disguised Illiteracy

Disguised Illiteracy

Disguised illiteracy shows a basic level of reading and writing skills with a low level of understanding and analysis. In addition to hiding from and avoiding daily and social activities of a cognitive nature.

We may believe that illiteracy – in its traditional Concept – poses a real threat to future generations. Despite the hard and diligent work by the government systems, institutions, and civil organizations to bridge the gap which is left by illiteracy in educational plans, we are actually facing a bigger and more dangerous dilemma. There is another form of illiteracy, which embodies a fundamental aspect of knowledge and culture with an inability to keep up with cognitive activities, analysis, and understanding of data.

Facts about disguised illiteracy

Disguised illiteracy is a problem with a negative impact on society. “Its danger lies in the fact that the disguised illiterates are unaware of their illiteracy, which means their illiteracy is hidden from themselves as well as others. It also means that disguised illiterates do not fully understand the information and the ideas that are being received, studied, or applied. Their actions, feelings, and beliefs are based on their assumptions, ideas, and unknown misconceptions.”¹

Moreover, according to the United Nations “617 million young people are not achieving minimum proficiency levels in reading and mathematics”² Therefore, it is possible that disguised illiteracy forms a ground for the spread of functional illiteracy represented by economic, educational, and other workplaces.

A person is functionally illiterate and cannot engage in all those activities in which literacy is required for the effective functioning of his group and community.  So, we find that disguised illiteracy has a hand in the dysfunction that society is witnessing.³ Although disguised illiteracy is associated with poverty rates and social background. However, it can lead to social exclusion, lack of self-esteem, lack of development, and social interaction. Soon we will be confronted with the risks of disguised illiteracy in children with undiagnosed dyslexia and dysgraphia.

This is due to the increasing phenomena of begging and their negative intellectual growth on the ground of their exclusion, whether from family or school.

Signs of disguised illiteracy

Perhaps the most prominent feature that disguised illiteracy plants in the soul of disguised illiterate is shame, anxiety about knowledge, and lack of self-confidence. It is also manifested by signs that are usually hidden by disguised illiterates.

Disguised illiteracy in adults is represented by:

  • They do not read for pleasure, they also avoid reading loudly.
  • They ask someone to read something to them for an excuse that may not be honest (for example, forgetting their glasses).
  • They hesitate to read to children.
  • They get mad if they are asked to read something and reply that they are not great proofreaders.
  • They avoid writing checks, grocery lists, or cards.⁴

Children’s disguised illiteracy signs are as follows:

  • They just want to read the books they have read before and they might say that they don’t even like reading.
  • They generally mispronounce or misread, especially when reading aloud.
  • They guess words instead of pronouncing sounds as they move to an unfamiliar word.
  • They look at the listener’s face to see if their reading is correct and correct.
  • They get stomach aches, and headaches and have to go to the bathroom when they are asked to read or write, this may be true due to their fear and tension or pretending to do so.
  •  A child may misbehave when he is asked to read or write something.⁴

Between silence and stigma

In general, illiterate people feel ashamed and embarrassed about their illiteracy due to the social stigma they are exposed to and the lack of access to their rights. In the case of disguised illiteracy, the illiterate ignores his ignorance and even claims knowledge. This is due to his lack of confidence to keep abreast of developments and knowledge around him, this worsens his psychological state and adversely affects his social performance.

Despite the widespread of this phenomenon, there is still silence around talking about and addressing it. This is due to the problems and issues intertwined with it. The most important method to address disguised illiteracy is to adopt an educational strategy that transfers all individuals at different educational levels from the stage of indoctrination to the interactive stage.

The Role of Society in Confronting disguised illiteracy

Eliminating the problem at its root is more important than addressing the effects of the problem. Considering education as the distorted axis of disguised illiteracy, successful response, and elimination lie in the adoption of the culture of interactive and continuous education. Encouraging self-learning processes, including online learning, is also a good option to catch up.

Such actions cannot be achieved without having social and participatory responsibility. Each individual can help their peers in the process of learning and gaining knowledge. In addition to enabling him to continue using reading, writing, and calculation skills for his personal development and the development of his society.

The goals of the Uplifting Syrian Women initiative are to address illiteracy

Quality education is one of the most important goals that the initiative seeks to achieve through its various services. To empower and promote women in general and Syrian women in particular.

The initiative provides monthly educational courses. These educational courses focus on different disciplines that support the academic education that the girl has received or are currently receiving. Also, for those wishing to learn from scratch, there are always courses for beginners in various fields.

In addition to workshops that help girls to have the necessary skills and tools to enter the labor market. Actually, disguised illiteracy is a multifaceted disaster, both economically and in terms of deteriorating mental and physical health, social isolation, dependence, legal issues, and others.

If education or a family cannot provide a lifeline for the child and enrich his education, There will be a dangerous and terrifying chance for the exploiters to put their ideas and principles in his mind, especially in the current technological era.

So don’t stop learning and Improving yourselves, Contribute to helping our youth, children, and parents and invite them to develop themselves scientifically and cognitively.

A Success Story - A'zza Al-Abdullah

Since we believe that every pursuer is ultimately a winner, and everyone is capable of reaching their goals, we will allocate a monthly corner to talk about the success stories of women from the modern and contemporary history of Syria.

Our story today is about the Champion of Syria and the Arab world several times (singles, doubles, and mixed doubles) in the table tennis game “Ping-Pong”.
A’zza Hani Al-Abdullah was born in Hama and lived in Damascus, she then moved to Homs after her marriage. Despite this big change in her life at the time, she loved the city and felt like she belonged.

Her first passion was sports, and her interest went beyond ping-pong; as she was always present in the basketball and football matches at a time when there would be no other girls in the audience, but that didn’t stop her from pursuing her passion.
She started training in middle school and gradually evolved from an amateur athlete to a professional and a champion.

Our heroine refers to the period of her playing sports as the most beautiful time of her life, in spite of all the difficulties and hardships she lived through. This period was rich in training, travel, and camps inside and outside of Syria. She says:
“The first condition to surpass in sport is passion, and the second is the commitment to training, whether individually or with the team”.

Although she quit playing and didn’t become a coach as it isn’t necessary for every player to become one, she remains a passionate fan of her game (table tennis) following up with the matches and updates.

Despite her impressive success in sports, she didn’t neglect any other aspect of her life; she graduated from the Institute of Engineering, worked in the Housing Association, and then she devoted herself to caring for her children.

As for her other interests, she is a fan and regular visitor to the cultural center of Homs, and lately, she’s been busy working with the “Nour Emesa” women’s network, supervised by the UNDP, as part of a group of networks in all Syrian Governorates.
In addition to being a member of the board of directors of the “Fraternity Club” with five other men, who are working hard to revive the damaged club after years of war, they plan to include a study zone and a kitchen within the new premises.

Our heroine says: “Success is to love what you do, be passionate about it, and have faith in it and its mission, together with serious commitment, this combination is the way for every person to achieve success”.

In conclusion, she addressed the Uplifting Syrian Women Initiative, saying: “I encourage and support every initiative that seeks to empower women and grant them their rights, through which we will achieve equitability and social cohesion, and I’m very pleased to see young women volunteering for this goal”.

Clean Water and Sanitation

Clean Water and Sanitation- Sustainable development goals in Syria

Clean Water and Sanitation

Clean Water and Sanitation - Sustainable development goals in Syria

The relationship between clean water and sanitation is strong. There is no cleanliness without water. Therefor, there is nothing on Earth as important as water; it is the lifeblood of our world and the mystery of existence. In addition, the emergence of civilizations is linked to the availability of water; the greatest civilizations were established on the banks of rivers and their continuity was linked to the abundance of clean water for food and drink, as well as for watering the animals and plants. Water conservation has been a fundamental and essential matter since ancient times, and it is still to this day.

Clean water, personal hygiene (Sanitation), and development factors

Globally, the number of people without access to an improved source of water – clean water free of any external pollution – has halved over the past twenty-five years, the poorest countries are struggling to provide safe and clean water and sanitation for all their citizens in a sustainable manner. As a result, more than a quarter of the population in low-income countries and more than half of the population in lower-middle-income countries had access to improved sanitation facilities in 2015.

The delivery of water supply and sanitation is no longer just a challenge to secure an improved source, but it is intrinsically linked with climate change, water resource management, water scarcity, and water quality. Access to safe water and adequate sanitation is a basic human right and underpins success in development areas such as agriculture, energy, economy.

This is why Sustainable Development Goal 6 recognizes that sustainably managing water goes beyond simply providing a safe water supply and sanitation to address the broader water context, such as:

  • Water quality.
  • Wastewater management.
  • Water scarcity.
  • Use efficiency.
  • Water resources management.
  • The protection and restoration of water-related ecosystems.¹

Balancing water demand with available resources

Many countries around the world are facing the threat of water scarcity prompting calls for efficient water use, while the demand for water continues to grow and the global per capita freshwater supplies have been nearly halved over the past 50 years. Today, the Middle East, North Africa, and South Asia are classified as water stressed-regions, with less than 1,700 cubic meters of water available per year per person.¹ Moreover, the use of water in agriculture and energy generation will exacerbate competition for water use, and the agricultural sector accounts for over 70 percent of global freshwater withdrawals.¹

It is anticipated that by 2050, providing water for a planet living on increasing consumption will become a very difficult challenge, and it is also estimated that the demand for energy generation, which is water intensive, to increase by 35 percent and water withdrawals for energy generation are projected to grow by 20 percent over the next two decades.¹ Furthermore, climate change is expected to exacerbate the situation by increasing water stress in arid regions, and by increasing the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events.

By 2030, half of the world’s population is expected to suffer from water stress.¹ In order to sustain economic growth, and protect and restore water-related ecological systems, many countries, including high-income countries, need to manage their water resources more effectively.

Increasing freshwater consumption and pollution put increasing stress on freshwater systems and hence threaten the sustainability of the water resource itself and its value to humans and to ecosystems. Large infrastructure investments, especially in wealthy countries, have significantly reduced the threat of human water security (in terms of water quality, at least).

In addition, protecting and restoring water-related ecological systems requires significant improvements in water resources management especially in developing countries as well as significant investments in both developed and developing nations. This is fundamental for protecting the resource base required to deliver safe water for all.¹

Access to clean drinking water

In 2015, 91 percent of the world’s population had access to an improved drinking water source, exceeding the Millennium Development Goal target of 88 percent.¹ However, more than 660 million people still lack access to clean water (mostly in rural areas, predominantly in Sub-Saharan Africa).¹ Furthermore, over 250 million dollars in Gross Domestic Product is spent annually in low- and middle-income countries without tangible benefits, due to inadequate water supply and sanitation services; at a country level, this can be as much as 7 percent of Gross Domestic Product.¹

Even for those with access to water, the service is often inadequate or unsustainable, and the water from an improved source is not necessarily safe to drink.¹

Access to sanitation facilities

Only 68 percent of the world’s population has access to improved sanitation facilities for personal hygiene, which is below the target of the Millennium Development Goals of 77 percent.¹ Sustainable Development Goal 6 aims to ensure adequate sanitation for all and to put an end to open defecation, which in turn leads to water pollution and the spread of diseases such as cholera, diarrhea, and dysentery.

According to figures, around 842,000 people die annually as a result of diarrhea (due to unsafe drinking water), poor sanitation services, or lack of public health.¹ The problem is widespread in rural areas of South Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa, where 7 out of 10 people lack access to safe and hygienic toilet facilities in rural areas, mostly in Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia.¹

Furthermore, rapid urbanization contributes to more than 700 million urban dwellers not having access to sanitation services, as only 10 percent of wastewater in low- and middle-income countries is treated in urban areas, as the amount of wastewater increases, the impact on public health also increases.¹

The efforts to provide clean water and sanitation

Providing clean water for all is a necessary and urgent need and one of the important essentials of the world we want to live in, and there is sufficient fresh water to achieve this goal. However, due to bad economics, millions of people including children die every year.

Therefore, most countries – including Syria – are making every effort to ensure clean water and personal hygiene. They participate in several annual global conferences, including the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development, and the World Summit on Sustainable Development to discuss the steps to ensure the provision of clean water.

Syria has committed itself to develop mechanisms to ensure the implementation of activities related to the participation of various components of the Syrian people in the achievement of all sustainable development goals. The role of supporters such as “Insaf for Development”, a humanitarian organization based in Syria which works in service, education, and community, cannot be overlooked; as it has made many efforts to secure clean water for all people. The “World Vision International” organization also provides services and activities to help many of those affected or who suffer from a lack of basic needs.²

water conservation is one of the most important issues that countries strive to find solutions for, especially with the spread of drought, by working on all levels. Water is directly linked to life and survival, and without water, life on Earth would end. Severe suffering is apparent in many countries that suffer from scarce rains, and the lack of water sources such as seas, rivers and springs. This itself poses the greatest challenge for States and Governments.

Will countries be able to find the necessary and adequate solutions? The most important question is: How will people solve the problem of the shortage of clean water and manage personal hygiene until appropriate solutions are developed?
